Taiwan’s dance group gets $5m donation

TAIPEI-Taiwan’s Cloud Gate, a leading Asian dance group, said Thursday it had received $5 million from a US charitable foundation to help rebuild its headquarters which was destroyed in a fire.
The surprise donation completes the group’s efforts to raise Tw$660 million ($21.85 million), the amount needed to build the headquarters at Tamshui outside the capital. The donation was made through The Alphawood Foundation, set up by US entrepreneur and philanthropist Fred Eychaner, president and CEO of Newsweb Corporation. Cloud Gate, founded by choreographer Lin Hwai-min in 1973, suffered a severe setback in 2008 when its studio, sets, costumes and archives were destroyed in a fire.
