15 migrants, mostly children, die at sea on way to Spain: police

At least fifteen migrants, including nine children between the ages of one and four years, died on board a boat that was heading for southern Spain from Africa, police said Thursday. The body of a woman was found on board the boat along with 33 survivors of the attempted crossing when it was intercepted some 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Almeria, a local police spokesman told Agencies. The bodies of the others who died during the crossing "had been thrown overboard by their travelling companions," he said. The survivers, which public radio RNE said included three pregnant women and a baby, were all severely weakened after their journey.
