Pakistan's ambassador to US, Hussain Haqqani, pointed out rightly the other day that Pakistanis need to change their mentality. The US has always proved to be a friend of Pakistan during the critical junctures of our history. Few people know that Quaid-i-Azam had sent an envoy to US even before the creation of Pakistan. This shows the importance of US in the eyes of top Pakistani leadership. Pakistan managed to obtain a ceasefire deal over Kargil after US President Bill Clinton personally intervened and invited Nawaz Sharif on American Independence Day. A vast majority of people blame US for the problems facing our country. One must understand that the relations between the nations are based on ground realities and not on emotions. The politicians who blame US for everything are actually keeping the country backward. They have weakened the country by their undue political bickering and corruption scams. Blaming US for our own follies is their last resort. -KHUBAIB USMANI, Islamabad, via e-mail, June 30.
