For welfare of people?

"Have I done anything unconstitutional? Yes, I did on Nov. 3 (2007)" The Chief of Army Staff said this on November 17, 2007 while talking to a BBC correspondent. A 13-member bench of the Supreme Court, while issuing a detailed judgment on the review petition held that the extra-constitutional measures of Nov. 3 were taken by the COAS in the larger interest of the state and for the welfare of the people and the doctrine of salus populi est suprema lex applies. (July 04, 2008). Now I want people like Mr. Pirzada and Mr. Qayyum Malik to educate this nation on: (a) can an extra constitutional measure be considered best for the welfare of the people? Is this not an insult to the judges' own oath? (b) Has this act of Nov 3 actually helped the nation in any way? (c) can a bunch of judges who benefited from and got elevated due to the November 3 act give a fair judgment on this issue?-ABDUL RAUF, Fateh Jang, via e-mail, July 7.
