RAWALPINDI - Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar has underlined the need for modern education to achieve the targets of progress, prosperity and success in the country. He was addressing the first day of the second convocation of Foundation University Islamabad (FUI),( held at the university auditorium at DHA-I on Wednesday "We as individuals must focus to the national goals of eliminating poverty and achieving prosperity", he said, adding that a positive attitude creates positive synergies, which lead to higher productivity, good teamwork, passion and optimism. The FUI Chancellor, Chaudhry Kamran Rasool, President Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Arif Hassan, Rector Prof Dr Manzoor Hussain Khan and members of board of governors included world renowned education experts, dignitaries, government officers, entrepreneurs from medical industry and other prominent personalities from society were also present on this occasion. On the first day of FUI convocation-2008, which was held to award the degrees and medals to the graduating students, 81 students received degrees, medals and certificates. Ch Ahmed Mukhtar said that the FUI was doing a great national service in assisting the public sector in providing health care and education. The commendable role being played by FUI towards these two cardinal pillars of our social sector was praise worthy, he added. He informed that FUI has been short-listed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) out of the private sector universities for being eligible for 50 per cent matching grant in the areas of research, faculty development and up gradation of facilities of improvement.   The matter would also be referred to the Ministry of Health govt of Pakistan as to how private medical colleges could be assisted to excel respecting research endeavors, faculty and infrastructure development, job opportunities, talent/merit scholarships and financial assistance scheme for excelling and needy students/ The minister congratulated all successful students and their parents as well as appreciated the FUI managements and its all faculty members for their sincere efforts to promote international level Medical Education among these students and preparing them to face and accomplish all modern-day challenges. Welcoming the guests President FUI Lt Gen (r) Arif Hassan told that Fauji Foundation was purely a private sector venture, which had been endeavoring to solve the problems of health and education since 1954. He said that the modern institute like FUI was also a project of Fauji Foundation and another step in its welfare and social welfare activities. At this occasion, FUI Rector Prof Dr Manzoor Hussain Khan also disclosed the annual performance report of varsity. He also made a speech to successful students and said that after the medical college of FUI, now the responsibilities lies on the shoulders of these successful students and they should prove themselves to be a pride for their parents, nation and country and above all they should be a ray of hope for sad humanity irrespective of any cast, religion and color discrimination. At the end, the Defence Minister, Ch Ahmed Mukhtar, and Chancellor FUI Ch Kamran Rasool presented degrees, gold medals and certificates to the graduate, MBBS students of FUI. Chief guest Ch Ahmed Mukhtar was also presented the souvenir of FUI by Rector FUI Dr Manzoor Hussain Khan. The FUI MBBS Dr Shahid Iqbal was awarded two gold medals with certificates whereas Dr Hina Maqsud got gold medal with certificate and Khush Bakht was awarded gold medal while Dr Hassan Shehzad grasped gold medal with certificate and Dr Iram Tahir clutched three silver medals with certificate. Best Graduating Students medals of session 2003-07 were given to Dr Iram Tariq and Mehmood.
