SIALKOT - Consumers have strongly protested against the Gujranwala Electric Power Company for issuing inflated electricity bills for the month of July 2011 in Sialkot district. Moreover, the bills have been issued a day before the last date for payment due to which the consumers have been facing great ordeal in getting the inflated bills corrected. The perturbed people also complained that the officials concerned in often found absent from their seats. The last due date for payment of these bills was July 11, 2011. Due to the absence of the Gepco officials, the perturbed consumers remained unable to get instalments of bills made. Most of the consumers complained that this time the Gepco has issued the inflated power bills with a difference of 100 to 200 units. They said that the electricity meters were showing reading less than the reading shown on the bills which have a difference. Majority of the people was witnessed to check their electricity meters reading while keeping the inflated electricity bills in hands. They said that this time the Gepco has targeted the domestic consumers. They expressed grave concern over the situation and said that the Gepco had issued the inflated power bills for this months without getting the fresh meter readings. When contacted, the Gepco officials in Sialkot and Daska said by telephone that this month the electricity bills were issued without taking the fresh meter readings because of the end of the fiscal year 2010-2011. Muhammad Rafiq, another perturbed consumer, said that he along with his family was in Islamabad for two months, as his house was locked with all the switches off, but he has received Rs.7262 bill for this month. Chairman Citizens Rights Protection Forum Dr Muhammad Muneer Butt, Shehar-e-Iqbal Welfare Forum President Muhammad Anwar Ali Khan, Thinkers Forum Daska Chairman Muhammad Jamil Sethi and Haqooq-e-Shehariyaan Daska Chairman Shehbaz Ali Mohsin have expressed grave concern over this alleged highhandedness of Gepco officials. They urged the higher authorities to take notice of this critical situation and make some effective measures to give relief to the consumers.
