PESHAWAR - Activists of Muttahidda Talba Mahaz (MTM) Government College Peshawar on Tuesday held a protest demonstration against their principal for allegedly making huge embezzlement in the college funds.

The protesting students led by Munsif Khalil and Saad Waqas were holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans against principal. They demanded stern departmental action against their principal. The infuriated students raised slogans against misusing college funds.     

Addressing the protestors, the student leaders alleged that their principal had been using air-conditions, computers and water dispenser of college at his home.

The police personnel deployed at main gate treating students in a very insulting manner.

The protesting students demanded early removal of what they said corrupt principal and recovery of the college funds. They also threatened to launch a protest campaign if the government and authorities concerned were failed to take stern action against the principal.

Welfare fund

The employees of University of Peshawar have established students' welfare fund for the poor and needy students of university.

The fund would be financed through volunteered monthly deduction of money from employees of University of Peshawar and would start extending grants from the coming academic year. This was categorically acceded to in the meeting of the heads of university departments with Vice Chancellor UoP Prof. Dr Muhammad Rasul Jan in the chair.

A committee headed by a sitting dean would look after the fund whereas a separate account be maintained for the same to extend financial support to the students on need basis. An amount ranging from Rs500 to Rs200 per month would be deducted from salaries of the employees subject to their (individual) consent to contribute towards the noble cause. 

The meeting also finalised arrangements for the annual MA/ M. Sc examination scheduled to start from August 21, 2013. Besides a committee headed by BS Controller Examination was convened to ensure uniform conduction of BS four years exams.

The vice chancellor termed the creation of students' welfare fund as a greatest philanthropy and called it a move to encourage the poor talented students of KPK and Fata to contribute towards national growth. He appreciated the improvement in HEC ranking of University of Peshawar compared to last year.

Dr Jan stressed on the heads of departments to implement research culture and contribute towards enhancing University ranking, second to none, in the country.  He praised the role of Department of Pharmacy, Department of Chemistry and Centre of Biotechnology and Microbiology in contributing towards University ranking.

"Seeing the growing loadshedding problem in the country, University of Peshawar through the cooperation of other varsities on campus has decided to install its own power generation mechanism and groundwork on the same has already been started," the VC informed the meeting.

He urged the heads of departments to ensure installation of generators and provide uninterrupted power supply to students in the coming MA/ M. Sc examinations.

Earlier the heads of departments informed the chair that forty nine research projects had been submitted to the Science and Technology government departments and HEC for approval while the faculty and research students had been taken on board to make their units as research institutes.
