rawalpindi - A suspected car lifter was killed in an encounter with Golra police in Tarnol area on late Friday night, informed police yesterday.

However, the family of the twenty-six-year-old slain Danish Zahid, son of Zahid Altaf, claimed that Islamabad police killed their loved one in a fake shootout after subjecting him to severe torture during illegal detention.

They staged a protest demonstration and blocked Adiala Road by placing dead body in the middle of the road. They also chanted slogans against Islamabad police.

Talking to The Nation, a high ranking police officer, seeking anonymity, said that a citizen Babar Aslam, resident of G-13/2, reported to police that his van bearing registration number JF-586 had been snatched at gunpoint at Muhammadi Chowk, G-13. He said that a cop deputed at Tarnol checkpoint spotted the car on Fateh Jang Road and started chasing it. The car was stopped near Tarnol Chowk.

However, when Danish Zahid saw police, he opened fire at the police party. The police retaliated and as a result one bullet hit the person in the left side near ribs, the police officer said adding that the police tried to shift him to hospital but he died on the way.

“The deceased was identified as Danish Zahid son of Zahid Altaf, resident of Model Town, Lahore,” he said. The dead body of Danish was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for post mortem. Later, it was handed over to heirs for burial, he informed. A case was also registered with police station Golra and further investigation is under way, he said.

When contacted, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Tariq Masood Yasin said that till now there is no indication that it could be a fake encounter. “In any case judicial inquiry will be held to determine facts,” he said in response to another query.

On the other hand, the relatives of Danish Zahid accused Golra police of killing him in fake encounter. They alleged that police also detained Danish and subjected him to severe torture. They also staged a protest demonstration against Islamabad police and blocked Adiala Road from Dhama Morr for traffic by placing the dead body in the middle of the road.

Shahzaib Ahmed, a cousin of Danish, told The Nation that Danish reached Islamabad on Friday to greet Eid to his friend Junaid. He said that he left house of his friend at 11:00pm and started travelling towards Adiala Road to meet her sister who resides in Mumtaz Market. He said that a police party stopped Danish at a picket in Tarnol area and later detained him illegally. During detention, he said, police tortured him mercilessly and later killed him in a fake shootout.

“The sister of Danish received a phone call from PIMS. She was asked her to come to hospital to take the dead body of her brother,” he said.

The other relatives of the deceased, who were chanting slogans against Islamabad police, demanded Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to hold impartial inquiry into the incident and provide the family with justice. A heavy contingent of police led by SHO Malik Muhammad Yar also reached the spot and dispersed the protestors.

The IG said that police registered a car snatching case against Danish with PS Golra while another case was also lodged against him with PS Tarnol on charges of opening firing at police party.
