Musharraf files reply in NRO case

Islamabad: Former president Pervez Musharraf has filed the written reply in Supreme Court (SC) in connection with NRO case.

In his reply, Pervez Musharraf has declared the steps taken by him then as legal.

A petition was filed in SC against the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) taking the plea due to NRO loss amounting to billions of rupees was caused to the country. Therefore, the financial loss caused due to the promulgation of NRO should be recovered from those who had framed this law.

After conducting a preliminary hearing of the petition the court had issued notices to former presidents Asif Zardari and Pervez Musharraf on April 24.

Asif Zardari and others have already filed their replies in SC.

In his reply submitted by Pervez Musharraf in SC, he has said NRO was promulgated to end political victimization besides ensuring transparency in electoral process. No ill intent or interest was behind promulgation of NRO.

NRO was promulgated keeping in view the then prevalent situation. Advice for promulgation of NRO was given by the then prime minister and NRO was signed keeping in the view of national interest.

The steps taken at that time were in consonance with law. Therefore, the petition filed against NRO be dismissed, Musharraf further stated in his reply.

Supreme Court has summoned details of foreign assets and properties of Asif Ali Zardari and Pervez Musharraf in NRO case.

Former president Pervez Musharraf had promulgated NRO on October 05, 2007. A 17-member bench of SC had nullified NRO on December 16, 2009.
