LAHORE - THE Utility Store Corporation (USC) has shown remarkable improvement in its efficiency and efficacy during last few years. The sales have increased up to 40pc due the economy and quality. This phenomenon shows the confidence of a common man in USC. An article published in a section of press titled as “Has USC  proved itself successful in providing relief to  less privileged people?” caused an unrest among consumers and the staff of USC. USC has been completely discharging its responsibilities by providing relief to the poor community.

It is a matter of grave concern that despite all positive developments, a profitable institution has been termed as a failure. Sales amounting to Rs 22 billion during recent holy month of Ramadan show the confidence of people in USC. USC has been adding up a number of new branded and unbranded items in its assortment list. The main objective of USC is to provide relief to common man despite earning profits but it would be of a great worth to mention here that USC has contributed an amount of Rs 21 billion as tax to national exchequer.

From last decade USC is a financially autonomous institution besides the institution has expended its network remarkably. The corporation meets all operating expenses on its own. These expenses include selling and distribution expense, administrative expense, taxes, rents & carriage etc. USC has been playing its important role towards controlling the prices in the market. Ramadan relief package is a good example of this.

USC is not only providing daily use items on less prices but it also assists the government in natural calamity. In this regard the corporation uses its vast network and its human resource to serve the purpose. At the time of devastating earthquake of 2005 in KPK & AJK, in 2007 flood relief operation in Balochistan and Sindh, in 2008 flood relief operation in Balochistan, in 2009 serving the IDP’s of Manshera and Swat and in 2010, 2011, 2012 providing relief to the flood affectees of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan are some achievements of USC.

Now USC is attaining new heights of serving the nation by expanding its network at union council level. This shows the great commitment of the corporation to serve the people at their door step.  The project to establish one thousand more stores will further add to the capacity of USC to serve the people of Pakistan.

Currently 5500 branded products are registered with USC and these are being provided to people with excellent quality and reasonable prices. 6000 stores are continuously providing 5pc to 15pc discount on each product of daily use and their interrupted availability is ensured.

The brand of banaspati ghee is being sold by USC duly registered by PSQCA and UCS provides 10 to 15pc discount on it. A discount of Rs 20 to 25 is being provided on a 20Kg bag of wheat flour. The rising prices of sugar in open market has reached to Rs.60 per Kg whereas USC price of sugar is Rs. 47/Kg. USC super markets are being established in major cities. To date super markets have been established in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Muzzafarabad, Peshawar, Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan. This project will be expended to all major cities very soon. USC despite providing necessities to common man on discounted rates, it has proved itself as a profitable institution. The profit for the financial year 2010-11 was Rs.0.844 billion. During last five year USC has contributed Rs. 21.765 billion to national exchequer as tax. The prices at Utility stores remain 5 to 10pc less as compared to open market. Special Ramadan Relief packages are being provided during the Holy month of Ramadan. These packages include flour, ghee/oil, daal chana, baisan, dates, basmati rice, saila rice, broken rice, white gram, squashes, syrup, tea, milk, and spices. USC makes it possible to provide economical items to its customers by obtaining handsome discount from its vendors and by minimising its profit.

USC has been serving the less privileged people of Pakistan with full commitment, zeal and just. The corporation leaves no stone unturned in this regard. The corporation has advised its staff to be courteous with the customers. It is very important to mention here that due to the great trust of the customers in USC a large number of people visit their nearest store every day. This situation causes an environment of rush at some stores.
