Nasties on the box

Giving freedom to press does not mean that the media should become uncivilized and throw all cautions to wind in a quest to gain cheap popularity in public. According to my observation, both our print and electronic media tend to go overboard in their zest to reveal by coming out with it without due and proper investigations or confirmation of material. I think the media should become more responsible and should not take undue liberty of the freedom given to it. There has to be some code of conduct that should be strictly implemented by the PTA. In electronic media, certain anchorpersons do not know the art of handling their guests and become too embroiled in the discussion to the point of being rude with their guests in live shows. I remember Shaheed Benazir Bhutto actually walking out on the uncouth anchorperson of Geo TV's 'Jawab Deh'. One can be decent and civilized while questioning the guest in the studio and get the desired results. Anchorpersons like Iftikhar Ahmad, Jasmeen Manzoor and Mubashar Luqman need to learn some basic etiquette while questioning their guests. -MUHAMMAD AZHAR KHWAJA, Lahore, via e-mail, February 21.
