Burying women alive: 4 awarded life term

QUETTA-Anti-Terrorism Court has awarded life imprisonment to four accused on Tuesday for burying women alive in Naseerabad district of Balochistan. Reports of burying three women alive appeared in media in August, 2008. They were killed in the name of honour and buried in a remote area of Naseerabad. The Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court had taken suo moto notice of the news and directed for arresting all the accused. Bodies of only two women were exhumed under the directives of the court. Police had arrested 20 accused and submitted the challan of the case in Anti-Terrorist Court. Announcing the verdict court found four accused including Ghaus Bakhsh, Allah Bakhsh, Muhammad Arif and Rehmatullah guilty of killing women and awarded them life imprisonment besides a fine of rupees one lakh each. The court acquitted 16 other accused from charge. The burying alive of women in the Naseerabad area of Balochistan was reported in August, 2008 and prompted a countrywide outrage. Members of civil society and human rights organisations carried out protests and the issue was also raised in the Parliament.
