PU teacher gets PhD degree

LAHORE - Punjab University Department of French Incharge Saleha Nazeer has earned her PhD degree from the Sorbonne University after completion of her dissertation titled Iqbalian Critique of Modernity: A Comparative Study. The background of the dissertation was provided by one of the best known pieces of French literature, The Little Prince by Antonie de Saint Exupery. Taking this modern classic as a statement on the modern condition, the dissertation detailed Muhammad Iqbals critique of modernity and looked at how this critique was received by two Iranian intellectuals Ali Shariati and Jalal Al-e-Ahmad. The defense committee members made special mention of: 1) The originality and high standards of the dissertation, 2) the elegant translation of Iqbals Persian and Urdu poetry into French, and 3) the command and expertise of French by a scholar from non-francophone country. One of the committee members noted that Iqbals analysis shows that only Islam rises to the challenge of offering a vision that can humanise modernity and progress.
