LAHORE - The legal fraternity in the provincial metropolis on Friday renewed its pledge to resist any illegal and unconstitutional step against the democracy and the judiciary by any army dictator.
Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) adopted this resolution unanimously presented by its president Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry at General House meeting, convened to condemn March 9, 2007 step of former military dictator Pervez Musharraf to depose Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Addressing the bar members, Mr Shahram said although lawyers had named March 9 as Black Day yet it was also a ‘White Day’ in some aspects.
Former Supreme Court Bar Association president Asma Jahangir strongly criticised the superior judiciary accusing it of nepotism and favouritism while elevating judges.
She said if there was nepotism, favouritism and lack of governance in other institutions, the judiciary also had all these things. Asma said lawyers did not want get our people elevated as judges of high courts and Supreme Court but they wanted the judiciary in real meanings which deserve to be called as ‘My Lord’.
”The current judges are like portable order machines,” Asma said, adding that one ‘imported educated judge’ passed very pathetic orders wherein he was not only dismissed from services but also gave finding that those people having contacts with him would also be penalized.
“Such people are being elevated as judges who never appeared before courts as lawyer,” Asma maintained, adding that a lawyer was enrolled member of the Supreme Court Bar Association after his name was recommended for judge, which was sheer example of nepotism.
Asma was of the views that there were precedents of elevating sons and son-in-laws as judges, but now some judges were getting their wives elevated as judges.
She threatened to withdraw LHCBA representation from Judicial Commission if the appointment way of “Mola Jutt” did not come to an end.
The LHCBA also demanded all institutions of the state, including the judiciary, to function within their domains.
