LAHORE – PIA Employees union Peoples Unity has won the referendum held on Friday at different airports of the country, however the other competing unions Air League and United have alleged that the management had used official resources to back Unity’s win.
At the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, Sajid Gujjar competed for station president from Unity, while Mukhtar Bharwana fought from Air league and Anwaar Ch from United. As per results Unity obtained 497 votes, Air league 329 and United 99. Although Air league won from a few stations, Unity was the overall winner.
Apart from unions which were defeated by unity other associations of the airlines have already expressed their reservations over PIA management’s involvement in the referendum process, which was initiated a couple of weeks back.
Joint Action Committee of PIA Employees convener Captain Sohail Baloch and Deputy Convener Shoukat Jamshed had demanded PIA management to remain impartial in coming elections of Senior Staff Association (SSA) of PIA and referendum of CBA association.  Sources in the airline said that management was backing specific groups in the corporation, due to which there was anxiety in a section of employees.
