FOR 45 years this bizarre little house has survived everything that nature can throw at it. Balancing on a rock in the middle of the Drina River in Serbia, the house has been pounded by floods and high winds - yet stood strong. The structure is located near the town of Bajina Basta, Serbia, and has become a well-known attraction for visitors to the area. The idea for it came in 1968 when a group of young swimmers out having a splash in the river needed a place to rest. They found the rock and started using it regularly. Then as time went by, they wanted a more comfortable place to rest and began to place boards to lay on on top of the rock. As they wanted shelter from the sun, they began to build up, and the idea developed. The following year, one of the swimmers turned the rough idea into an actual construction project of this one-room home.

The parts and supplies were transported by boat and kayak, and the larger pieces were simply placed in the water upstream, and captured as they floated down past the building location.

The Drina River website calls it the House on the Drina River Island and describes the home as ‘a unique oasis of nature, [an escape] from the constraints of civilisation’. –DM
