Five people have been killed and three injured in a shooting at a backyard party near Pittsburgh.

The suspects are still at large, according to local media.

Four women and one man were shot and killed in the residential neighborhood in Wilkinsburg, about 8 miles east of the city.

In a briefing, county police said they were called to a shooting at what appeared to be backyard party or cookout just before 11pm.

Eight people had been shot, according to police, with four killed at the scene. The four others were transferred to hospital, where one woman died. Two men are in a critical condition and one woman is stable in hospital.

Lieutenant Andrew Schurman of Allegheny County homicide unit said the gunmen barged into the party and opened fire in an ambush-style attack.

Police said that ballistic evidence suggested that two gunmen were involved, using two different weapons, opening fire from an alley behind the address. When partygoers attempted to flee into the house, one gunman fired at the porch, where four were killed, the briefing said.

“I heard at least 20 shots,” a witness, Kayla Alexandra, told WPXI.

Several reporters in the area tweeted photographs of ambulances and police cars. Dozens of shell casings littered the pavement of an alleyway at the scene, media reports said.

Wilkinsburg is a borough of about 16,000 people, with many lower- and middle-income residents, demographic data shows.
