Living in fear

Political turmoil in the country took yet another twist but people seem indifferent to it all. We the common people of Pakistan are in the grip of an alarming rise in the rate of street crimes in our country. In the recent past, crimes like snatching of purses, looting, abduction on gunpoint, or even murdering for money have become a rather usual matter in our life. We are in a state of constant fear from street thugs who can strike anywhere at anytime. The reasons for these crimes are well known; price-hike, unemployment and lawlessness. Will this weak coalition government be able to do something to allay this atmosphere of constant fear?-BACHA HUSSAIN, Lahore, via e-mail, May 7.
