KARACHI - Pakistan Steel miss a penalty kick in the initial minute of play to suffer 2-1 defeat at the hands of PWD in the crucial and last league match of the fourteen-team national Challenge Cup football here Friday at the Peoples Football stadium. Hard-earned victory gave PWD a place in the knockout quarter-finals stage of the championship from Group D. Pakistan Steel Mills Captain Muhammad Akram missed the vital penalty kick five minuets after kick off. PWD goal-keeper Bilal smartly anticipated the direction of the well taken kick from Akram and moved nicely to deny Steel team its best chance to score. The final outcome of the low scoring match could have been different had Pakistan Steel taken the lead. PWD shook off its initial nervousness and settled down to play some good football. In 42nd minute of play PWD moved ahead converting a penalty kick. Vice captain of the team Muhammad Ramzan placed the ball on the right side to beat keeper Amin. PWD changing the end with one goal advantage resumed second half-dominating attack and controlling midfield. They succeeded in consolidating their first half advantage with second goal in 81st minute. Mahboob who was inducted into play as substitute stole the ball almost from the hands of keeper during a raid on opponents goal to score. Even second reverse did not dampen the fighting spirit of the Steel makers. They poured everything into attack with the hope to reverse the expected result and they succeeded at least reducing the margin by a goal. Muhammed Akmal produced the goal much to the relief of the Steel makers. Time, however, ran out for the Steel Mills. In the extended injury time PWD's penalty converter Ramzan was red carded and would miss the quarter-final contest. From Group A, Pakistan Navy with nine points and KRL with six moved into the knock out stage of the event. NBP (6) and Wapda (3) clinched quarter final sports from Group B. In the Group C considered as group of death KPT (7) and HBL (6) found their way into the last eight. PIA was ousted from this four team group in which all the top local teams were brought together. Other weaker teams got easy groups and they succeeded to reach the second stage where as stronger teams like PIA got raw deal. KESC (4) and PWD (3) clinched quarter-final places from group D.
