Stage set to stabilise Balochistan

ISLAMABAD - After a successful experiment in the NWFP, the stage is set to stabilise Balochistan through political means. Official sources told TheNation on Friday that the coalition government had launched efforts to bring the political forces in Balochistan on board to stabilise the troubled province. Apart from releasing political prisoners and tracing missing persons, the federal government has decided to do its utmost, including payment of compensation to the affected families as part of a well-planned strategy to bring the province back on path of progress and prosperity. The Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani gave a detailed briefing to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on security situation in Balochistan. The briefing was a sequel to an earlier briefing given on FATA's security situation last month. General Kayani underlined the significance of development works initiated by the government with the assistance of the Army and Frontier Corps to improve the living conditions of the people in the province. The Prime Minister emphasised the need to combine the efforts of all elements of national power towards the attainment of peace and progress in Balochistan through a comprehensive strategy based on political engagement, economic development and use of minimum force if required. The Governor Balochistan Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raeesani, Chief Secretary Balochistan, Secretary Interior, IG Balochistan and other senior officials also attended the meeting. In another development, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani also held a meeting with Balochistan Governor and the Chief Minister and reiterated the federal government's commitment in redressing the grievances of the people of Balochistan through various steps to improve the situation. While talking to the Governor and Chief Minister at the PM House, the PM said a new strategy was under formulation in consultation with representatives of the provincial government for dealing with the issue of law and order in the province. He said the political forces in the province have to play a role in this regard, as it would improve the security and protection of the citizens. The Governor and CM Balochistan also briefed the PM about the supply situation of wheat and flour in the province. The government's decision of providing 100,000 tons of additional wheat to the province to meet its requirements was also appreciated in the province. The PM said the government was keeping a close watch on the wheat situation all over the country and would provide more wheat to Balochistan if required. He directed the provincial government to take steps for stopping smuggling of wheat across the border in coordination with law enforcement agencies.
