3 workers dead as boiler explodes

KARACHI - At least three labourers were burnt to death while many others sustained injuries when a boiler exploded in a private chipboard-making factory within Landhi area. Police officials have formed an inquiry committee to probe the incident. More than 50 workers were present in different sections of nearly 3,000 square yards factory when the boiler exploded. Some 7 employees were working in the next department in a night shift and a security guard deputed there was also amongst the victims. All the victims sustained burn injuries; two of them died on the spot while one died on way to hospital. The deceased hailed from Thatta and Badin and resided here in the Landhi Industrial Area. Their families took their bodies away for burial after the legal formalities were completed. The incident occurred on Saturday at 4.30am. The factory is located at Sector 29, Landhi Industrial Area within the limits of Sharafi Goth police station. Following the incident, the ambulances from the different welfare associations, fire-fighters and heavy contingent of law enforcers arrived to the scene and participated in the rescue work. According to Town sources, the sound of the blast was so intense that even sleeping people rushed out of their houses. The victims were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and later brought to Burn Ward of the Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors pronounced the deaths of three labourers. The deceased were identified as Razzak, 35, Sattar, 30, and Shabbir, 31. Four workers, who were among the injured, later left for their homes after receiving medical aid while a security guard of the factory, Khushi Mohammad, is admitted to the hospital. Despite the passage of almost 18 hours, the police was unable to ascertain the exact cause of the incident, as they were busy in security duty of the prime minister who is in the City and not a single statement was recorded in this regard. Landhi Town SP Zahid Hussain Shah told The Nation that it would be premature to say anything about the cause of the incident. The SP, however, confirmed the deaths of three. SHO Karam Shah Lashari said that there was still no progress in the case. We have to record the statements of injured victims, eyewitnesses, relatives of deceased and others, he added. The police was also looking for the owner of the factory. The inquiry committee has been formed and the case would be registered if any negligence found.
