ISLAMABAD  - In a major development that will shock certain quarters, two members of the PEMRA’s committee probing allegations of defence ministry against Geo TV resigned after a dispute erupted within the committee on Friday and one of the members said that the committee was taking dictation from the government.
Other members of the committee referred the matter to the attorney general to seek legal advice on the issue.
The ministry of information the other day constituted the council on the directions of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif while Irfan Siddiqui, senior journalist and special assistant to the prime minister, was made its chairman. Two members of the committee including Israr Abbasi and Main Shams announced to boycott and then resigned from the committee while talking to the media persons. Both of them said that they resigned because the committee wanted to take the decision while taking the government on board. They said that the committee itself was not deciding the matter.
Talking to the media persons after boycotting the committee meeting, Abbasi said that members of committee were getting advice from the government and representative of Geo TV on the matter. He said the committee was reluctant to fine or suspend the licence of Geo TV, and wanted to refer the matter to complaints commission for decision.
Main Shams said that the federal government wanted to commit the suicide attack on this sensitive issue and he could do nothing to stop it.
Earlier, secretary information, secretary interior, chairman FBR and other members of PEMRA including Acting Chairman Pervaiz Rathor, Israr Abbasi, Main Sham, Fareeha Iftikhar, Shama Perveen and recently appointed executive member of Pemra Kamalud Din Tipu attended the committee meeting.
