KARACHI - Assailants shot dead security in-charge of Sindh Secretariat and Sindh High Court, DSP Zulfiqar Zaidi and his driver at a hotel in Shah Faisal Colony here on Saturday.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sindh High Court Chief Justice Faisal Arab sought reports into the incident of the target killing.

Registrar Sindh High Court Fahim Ahmad Siddiqui said the deceased was security in-charge of the Sindh Hight Court.

Police said the incident occurred at a hotel near Eidgah Ground in Shah Faisal Colony in the jurisdiction of Shah Faisal Colony Police Station. Police further said that deceased DSP Zulfiqar Zaidi and his driver Shehzad were taking dinner at a hotel when at least four armed men on two motorbikes appeared on the scene and sprayed bullets on Zulfiqar Zaidi. DSP Zulfiqar and his driver Shehzad sustained bullet wounds. The culprits managed to escape from the scene after committing the crime.

Police shifted the victims to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) where doctors pronounced them dead. The deceased was a security in-charge of Sindh Secretariat and Sindh High Court. He was resident of Shah Faisal Colony No.3. Police investigators collected around 15 bullet shells from the crime scene and sent them for forensic examination.

Later, AIG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo visited the crime scene and examined the evidence collected from the site. The motives behind the crime could not be ascertained.

It merits mentioning here that Zulfiqar Zaidi is the second DSP who has been targeted within a week. Earlier, DSP Fateh Muhammad was shot dead in an armed attack at his car in Steel Town area.

DSP Zaidi has left behind a widow and a daughter.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the fatal attack on DSP Zulfiqar Zaidi in Karachi. He directed provincial government to beef up security in the provincial capital to avoid any such attack in future.

Seeking a report of the incident, the PM stressed upon the need for taking steps to boost police’s morale as it was playing key role in maintaining law and order.

He reiterated that government was fully committed to restore peace and stability in Karachi so that the citizens could lead their lives in peace and tranquility.

Separately, Chief Justice Sindh High Court, Justice Faisal Arab, taking notice of the target killing of DSP Zulfiqar Zaidi, asked inspector general of Sindh police to submit a report in this regard till Monday.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in a statement condemned the killing of DSP Zulfiqar and demanded early arrest of the culprits.
