LAHORE - Oath taking of Senator Muhammad Rafiq Rajwana for the office of Punjab governor will be held at the Governor’s House here today (Sunday).

Chief Justice Lahore High Court Manzoor Malik will administer oath to Mr Rajwana for the office of Governor.

Senator Rafique Rajwana was appointed Governor Punjab by President Mamnoon Hussain earlier this week. Following his appointment, Rajwana had said in a statement that he would make the utmost effort to serve the people of his province.

He also assured Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that he would meet the expectations of the higher leadership of the country.

After obtaining a law degree from Punjab University, Rajwana began his career as a judicial officer. He also served as an additional district and sessions judge.

He was appointed the president of Lahore High Court Bar Association's (LHCBA) Multan bench in 1996. Rajwana was then appointed as a senator on the seat vacated by former president Rafiq Tarar in 1998. He was appointed a senator on a PML-N general seat for the second time in 2012.

The position of Punjab Governor became vacant after Chaudhry Sarwar resigned from the post on January 29 after blaming the PML-N government of bad governance. He then joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

As the position remained vacant, several candidates were considered for the position which will be filled today by Senator Rajwana.

Hailing from southern Punjab, Rajwana has been active in the politics of the region. He has also been closely associated with PML-N throughout his political career.
