University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad emphasised that effective measures were needed to curb the menace of drug addiction in society.

He was addressing a seminar held here to highlight the ill-effects of drug addiction the other day.

On the occasion, speakers showed their concern that uses of drugs among the youth was increasing alarmingly whereas women drug addicts ratio was also showing upward trend. They also called for raising awareness among the masses as 4.25 million people in the country were drug dependent whereas 6.7 million people aged between 15 and 64 years used drugs over the past 12 months.

The seminar titled drug abuse prevention among youth was arranged by Institute of Agri Resource Economics, University of Agriculture Faisalabad and the Ministry of Narcotics Control.

The UAF VC said that awareness must be boosted especially among the youth about the side effects of drugs to prevent them from the menace. He said the teaching community, parents, religious scholars, and others must expedite their role in creating awareness among the masses. He said that social injustice, employment, etc are also the reasons of the drug addiction in the county.

Deputy Secretary Narcotic Control Division Iftikhar Anjum said that the all out efforts were being made to control the menace of drugs and eliminate it from the country. He said that the youth should come up to raise awareness about the hazards of drugs among their friends to control its spread. He said that life was given to serve the humanity and it was the duty of all and sundry to bring the addicts people back to life and make them active member of the society.

Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Dr Iqbal Zafar, Deputy Director Narcotics Control Division Ayesha Siddiqa and Institute Director Dr Muhammad Ashfaq also spoke on the occasion.
