Lahore - In a bid to gain public confidence, the Punjab police department has introduced Soft Cops who are tasked to arrest proclaimed offenders.

A team of 240 officers has been selected for this purpose, while DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf has ordered that 100 proclaimed offenders should be arrested in a week, according to a press release.

During a meeting with this new team and other senior officials at police lines Qilla Gujjar Singh on Saturday, the DIG highlighted the need of gaining public goodwill in order to curb the crimes. He ordered the cops to check with the station house officers and directly contact the applicants who have registered cases with police.

“If we our work seriously and put our best efforts in arresting all the proclaimed offenders, crime ratio will surely decreased,” Ashraf said while encouraging them.

He told the gathering that telephone sets and other facilities would be provided to the new team, while guiding them more about their tasks according to the new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Performance of these soft cops will be monitored every week, said Ashraf, adding the efficient officers would be appreciated. However, corruption would not be tolerated at any cost, he further warned.
