The crisis being faced by Pakistan is the worst it has had since its birth in 1947. What is most unfortunate is that even at the peak of this crisis, our ruling elite is interested only in protecting itself and is not bothered at all about the people. The attack on the ANP chief Asfandyar Wali is a case in point. After the suicide attack on him, he flurried to Islamabad within no time leaving behind his partymen, supporters and voters, all Pakhtuns in whose name he has been politicking all his life. Another coalition partner of Islamabad rulers, Mr. Altaf Hussain, does not even dare come to Pakistan; he hasn't in almost a decade now, due to security threats to his life. Asif Zardari, Fazalur Rehman and Nawaz Sharif etc all make limited movement in VVIP cavalcades with stringent security measures to protect their lives - people be damned. This, in a country, which is right now totally under their rule This lily-livered attitude of the rulers has created an environment of extreme uncertainty and fear within the public who are queasy about both their own security and the safety of the country. In this situation, Qazi Hussain Ahmed made the right decision by organizing a train march all the way from Peshawar to Karachi with stopovers in all major cities. Qazi roams around freely in the general public. In every small and large city, thousands of Jamaat e Islami workers are present to give him a rousing welcome. This has not just boosted the general public opinion about his party but has also created some confidence about the general security situation in the country. When people see someone from among the top leadership of country mingling freely with the general public, they feel secure about themselves. This was the need of the time and Qazi has ably delivered on this score. -SYED ALI VAQAS, Karachi, via e-mail, October 28.
