ISLAMABAD Former Olympians Shahbaz Ahmed Senior and Shahnaz Sheikh Monday hailed the performance of national hockey team in the World Cup Qualifier saying that the greenshirts are capable of producing remarkable results in the World Cup in India by maintaining the same spirit. After showing notable performance, Pakistan is now eligible to take part in the World Cup 2010 which would be held at Delhi, India, in March. Pakistani players toiled hard to get the berth in the top notch event of hockey. The national outfit displayed excellent skills to outplay all their respective opponents, said Shahbaz Ahmed Senior while talking to TheNation here on Monday. He further said that the results are a good omen for the revival of hockey. It is great achievement of Pakistani team. Had Pakistan failed to qualify for the World Cup, the game would have slumped to its lowest ebb now and it would have become really difficult to lift this game at even national level, he viewed. Shahbaz further said that after qualifying for the prestigious international hockey event, the responsibilities of the federation have increased. Now, they have to work hard to show results in the World Cup. The players should also be encouraged for the mega hockey event, the former said. Meanwhile, Shahnaz Sheikh said that Sohail Abbas performance in the final against Japan was a positive sign as earlier it was being said that Sohail could not score goals in big matches. Finally he broke the jinx and converted the penalty corners to lead the green shirts 3-0 win in the final, he said. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) should maintain the same squad for World Cup 2010, which will be played in March next year. The weather will also be suitable for Pakistan. There is no need to make any changes in the team as well as in the management because we have very little time for the mega event, he revealed. Responding to a question, he said that Pakistan should be in top-four in the world cup. It is time to push the national game ahead at international level. The team has to win best position in the 12-nation international hockey showpiece to attract the people towards the game, he viewed. Former Olympian encouraged the attacking hockey style and asked coaches and player to rectify their errors during the World Cup Qualifiers. We have to motivate the players and the team should enter the ground after forgetting the last 15 years results to create the winning spirit in the team, he suggested.
