Let us stop storing water at Mangla and Tarbela dams and stop generating power to duplicate the situation when the two dams will be completely silted up and there will be no regulation of river waters. River flows being seasonal there will be more water for three months and very little for nine months. Agriculture, industry and towns will get adequate supplies only for three months. There will be no transfer from the wet to the dry season. There will be no sowing in the Rabi season. Pakistan will become a one season country. Power generation will be on run-of-the-river basis. Availability of water for the populace will drop below the water-scarce level. There will be no reserve for any contingency. Let us do this for one year to get a feel of what we are headed for if a dam is not built at the earliest. Bhasha dam will be too little, too late, also it will not stop the floods in the five big tributaries of the Indus. South Punjab and Sindh will remain unprotected. KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, November 9.
