KARACHI - An Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) of police came under attack by some assailants of Lyari, while a gangster was killed and seven were apprehended during separate raids, here on Sunday.  

According to details, the police’s APC came under attack when unidentified gangsters resorted to indiscriminate fire in Singu Lane area, Lyari within the premises of Chakiwara police station. Sources said that the police team was entering Singu Lane area after a clash took place between two groups of gangsters – Uzair Baloch and Baba Ladla.

On the other hand, SSP Sheraz Nazir said that the armed gangsters resorted to indiscriminate fire at them when the police tried to nab them, adding that a tyre of the APC was burst; however, the police personnel remained unhurt in the attack. He said that the police cordoned off the entire area and started search operation.

Earlier on the night between Saturday and Sunday, a suspected gangster was killed during an encounter with police. The encounter took place in Kalakot area of Lyari when the police conducted a targeted raid at the hideout. The gangsters opened fire on police and in exchange of fire one gangster was killed and his companion managed to escape. His body was taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi. He was later identified as Khalil Baloch who was associated with the Uzair Baloch gang. Police said that the killed gangster was involved in number of cases of crime.

Separately, two suspected criminals were arrested after an encounter took place in Pirabad area. SHO Nasir Mehmood said that police also recovered Rs300, 000, two pistols and a motorcycle from their possession, adding that the suspects were involved in various cases of street crimes.

In another encounter, three suspects were arrested after an encounter at Gulzar Colony area of Korangi Industrial Area. The suspects were identified as Ibrahim, Hassan and Khizar. Two pistols were also recovered from their possession. Two more suspects, namely Noman Khan and Obaidullah were arrested after an exchange of fire with the Jamshed Quarters police. Police said that the suspects were arrested during snap checking, adding that the suspects opened fire at police and tried to escape; however, the police also fired back and arrested both the suspects and recovered weapons from their possession.

APP adds: Gulshan-e-Iqbal police arrested six suspects, including a target killer, dacoits and alleged street criminals, and recovered arms and looted items during raids at different places.The actions were taken by a police party led by SHO Gulshan-e-Iqbal Inspector Shabbir Ahmed Awan. This especial task was given by DIG East Zone Munir Ahmed Shaikh and SSP East Pir Muhammad Shah.

The police party raided five different sites and arrested in one of the raids an alleged target killer Tariq alias Khayal and recovered a pistol from his possession.

The accused has, according to police, confessed to the target killings of sub-inspector Haider Bhatti in the limits of Noor Jahan police station and social worker Saleem Kohistani in Manghopir police limits besides his involvement in a number of other target killing cases. In other actions, five suspects allegedly belonging to dacoit and street criminal groups were also arrested. They were identified as Mehboob Ali, Syed Adeel, Junaid Ahmed, Mujeebur Rehman and Jamshed Khan. Five pistols, five magazines, 24 bullets and looted items were also recovered from their possession. The accused were wanted in dozens of cases of robberies and street crimes.
