LAHORE - Police Thursday mounted one of the major security operations across the metropolis with massive deployment of force and strict snap -checking at the entry and exit points.  At least 15,000 police are deployed in Lahore to guard mourning processions on the eve of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), Urs of Data Darbar, and the annual preaching Raiwind congregation.

The main mourning procession will be taken from Nisar Haveli inside Mochi Gate and culminate at Karbala Gamay Shah after passing through traditional routes on Friday evening. Heavy police contingents will be deployed on the route of the central procession on early Friday with sharp-shooters on rooftops of high-rise structures. Also, several paramilitary units will remain on standby.  Authorities Thursday suspended the mobile phone service in the walled city citing security reasons. The district government has also declared local holiday on Friday (today) in connection with the annual Urs of the Sufi saint of the sub-continent.  DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf told reporters that the participants of the central mourning procession would be given four-layer security. He said that the Police Response Units, Dolphin Squads, and Elite Police Force would remain on patrol alongside the route of the central procession.   To a question, he said that the policemen were using biometric machines, android phones, metal detectors and walkthrough gates during security operations at Raiwind, Data Darbar, and in the walled city.
