MULTAN - Former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Imran Khan is the only political leader who enjoys all basic rights in the country.

Talking to the journalists here on Thursday, he said that Imran Khan had the liberty to say anything or criticise anyone without fear of any action against him. He said that the reaction of PML-N on decisions of courts is personal. He added that the PPP believes in democracy and always respected the institutions. “We want to see the institutions stronger. The motive behind restoring the constitution was to accord respect to the institutions,” he recalled.

Gilani recalled that Shaheed Bhutto and Mohtarma also appeared before the courts. He said that the PPP made historic efforts to strengthen democracy and institutions. He asked all the democratic powers in the country to get united at one platform and steer the country out of crisis.

Referring to the census, he said that the PPP has reservations on the results of the census. “But it is our desire that the elections should be held on time,” he added. He warned that the political crisis would worsen in the country if the elections are not held on time. “The only way to steer the country out of prevailing political crisis is to hold elections on their time,” he opined.

He disclosed that the PPP would turn 50 on November 30, adding that Bilawal Bhutto would hold a public meeting in Multan on December 15. He said that the alliance of PSP and MQM Pakistan would not make any major difference but the alliance is a good omen for political culture.

He congratulated the provincial organisation of PPP for holding a successful convention. Earlier, the PPP South Punjab office bearers held a convention with Makhdoom Ahmad Mehmood in the chair. The participants of the meeting finalised plan for the upcoming public meeting of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto and constituted a number of organising committees.

Earlier, addressing the meeting, the former Prime Minister said that Bilawal Bhutto’s public meeting would prove a game changer and it would set new political direction for the South Punjab. He claimed that the public meeting would prove that South Punjab was still fortress of PPP. He said that Bilawal Bhutto would kick off PPP’s election drive from Multan public meeting and then hold processions at all divisional and district headquarters level.

He disclosed that the celebrations for 50th yaum-e-tasees of PPP had been cancelled in regard of 12 Rabiul Awal and instead a golden jubilee function would be held in Islamabad on December 5. Similarly, the same function will be held at all district headquarters level on November 30. Recalling his removal from Prime Minister office, Gilani said that although serious unrest prevailed among the PPP workers, yet the PPP avoided any standoff and respected judiciary. He maintained that despite judicial murder of Bhutto, unjust cases on Benazir, Zardari and himself, the PPP always faced cases with utmost tolerance and accorded respect to the judiciary. “After I spent 10 years in jail, it emerged that the case I was jailed in was baseless,” he regretted.

He said that some people wanted elections to be held immediately so that they could become Prime Minister but the elections should be held on time. “I want to tell them that the governments are not made by holding big processions rather they are made by Allah,” he added. He said that by holding a successful public meeting on December 15, the PPP would prove that it was still the largest and most popular party in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Makhdoom Ahmad Mehmood said that process was underway to accomplish party reorganisation up to union council level. He said that the PPP was the party of martyrs and this party did not have any room for the cowards in its ranks. He paid rich tributes to the PPPP workers for what he said their commitment with the party cause. He claimed that the PPP would do clean sweep in next elections and get the people rid of takht-e-Lahore.
