LAHORE - A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court Thursday seeking contempt proceedings against Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of ousted PM Nawaz Sharif, over her remarks against judges

Amna Malik, a civil society activist, moved the petition through Advocate Azhar Siddique. She also made Pemra Chairman Absar Alam as party.

 “On November 8, a press statement was released by PML-N and its leadership, in which Maryam Nawaz committed a contempt of court; ridiculed and scandalised judges. She also defamed the judges of the superior courts apart from hitting the institutions which is also a crime,” the petitioner said.

Plea against Pemra chief

The Lahore High Court on Thursday sought arguments from Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority  Chairman Absar Alam in a petition challenging his appointment.  The court passed the order after the petitioner’s counsel Azhar Siddique concluded his arguments. The petitioner’s counsel said that Absar Alam was simple BA but he was posted as Pemra Chairman in violation of merit. He said Absar Alam was close buddy of Nawaz Sharif and had been running campaign against the judiciary to support him. He had completely failed to comply fulfill his official obligations.  The court adjourned further hearing until Nov 16, with directive to Absar Alam for final arguments.
