PESHAWAR - The 40-year record of archaeological sites and antiques in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province is missing from Federal Department of Archaeology. The missing record containing data since 1970 about historical archaeological sites and antiques in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa also includes details about smuggled antiques and other historical items recovered by customs and police. It is pertinent to mention here that the customs and police over the years have recovered some antiques including statues thousands of years old form smugglers. The data of these recoveries was also part of the record. After the incident over 15 archaeological sites and historical buildings in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa are being strictly guarded and monitored to thwart any theft of historical artefacts/antiques. There are some unconfirmed reports that some historical items are also missing after the disappearance of the record. Sources told TheNation that after the incident the government has formed a two-member committee to carry investigations into the incident. The committee composed of Dr Saleemul Haq and Dr Muhammad Arif has started the investigation and contacted customs as well as police personnel so far. The employees of the department at godown of the archaeology department have also been probed and their statements have been recorded.
