LAHOREThe PML-Q leadership declared here on Saturday that it had set up an 'alliance with the PML (Functional) and had not merged itself with the party of Pir Pagaro. They insisted that the party would maintain its separate identity and play a key role in steering the country out of the multiple crisis as it was acceptable to both the relevant domestic and international forces. The party leadership further said that they were in contact with the Jamaat-i-Islami, Tehrik-i-Insaaf and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and trying to set up a grand alliance A consultative meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain here. All office-bearers, legislators and ticket holders were present. Some of the participants asked the leadership as to who had approved the merger which was announced after a meeting that Chaudhry Shujaat Husain and Mushahid Hussain Syed recently held with Pir Pagaro in Karachi. Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi told the participants that the PML-Q had formed an alliance with the PML (Functional) and that the party was in favour of unity among all PML factions. He said the present set up had miserably failed to deliver and now alternatives were being considered by the relevant quarters. In his assessment the next two months would be very important for political developments. Pervaiz Elahi, who remained Punjab Chief Minister for five years before the 2008 polls, said the present system had died its own death. Mushahid Husain Syed taunted the PML (N) as a party that was doing part-time politics. He said it was the PML (Q) that had pointed out corruption in the Rental Power Plants and had taken the matter to court. About the party of Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf, he said it had died the day it was launched. In his opinion, the former President had created many problems for himself because of his irresponsible statements. Referring to the meetings various PML leaders held with the self-exiled former President, Mushahid said these were social interactions, having nothing to do with politics. He said that Musharraf has no future as he was unacceptable to the Army and the United States. He defended the PML-Qs alliance with the PML (Functional), saying Pir Pagaro was a formidable force in Sindh. Chaudhry Shujaat said he was not an NRO-beneficiary or a tax dodger, nor had he ever got any loan written off.The Chaudhrys were asked by the participants to play their role in settling differences in party ranks. It was decided that worker conventions would be held in various cities to mobilise the party supporters. Think tanks would also be set up on various subjects.
