MULTAN-Former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday that the government’s 120-day honeymoon period has proved to be a nightmare for the masses and feared that the public could give vent to its anger any time.

Talking to a delegation of PPP South Punjab office-bearers here on Wednesday, he added that skyrocketing prices of daily use items and edibles unveiled the reality of tall claims made by the rulers during the elections. “Today, the poor are getting poorer while the rulers are getting wealthier with every passing day,” he maintained.

He claimed that the rulers were fast losing their credibility because of their public-enemy policies which was highly dangerous for democracy. He said that the IMF was determined to snatch even last bite from the mouths of poor Pakistanis. He warned the masses that they would have to face even higher prices in coming days.

He declared that the PPPP would leave no stone unturned for pressing the government to hold local government elections on party basis. “We’ll not leave the ground vacant for non-democratic powers in local government elections and contest the polls with full force,” he added. He announced that a meeting of party’s South Punjab office-bearers would be held at Dogar House after Eid to evolve policy for upcoming local government elections. He said that some powers utilised all out tactics to block the way of PPPP in general elections. “But today, all those tried to push a pro-democracy political power like PPPP towards wall, have gone underground,” he added. He claimed that the PPPP would continue accountability of the government on and off the floor.

He urged the rulers to refrain from muting the voice of residents of South Punjab and fulfil their promises by creating new provinces. “If the government creates South Punjab and Bahawalpur provinces, we’ll support them as their workers,” he declared.
