KARACHI - A Station House Officer and the Station Investigation Officer were gunned down here in the jurisdictions of Sir Syed Police station.

Sir Syed Police Station SHO Irfan Hyder and SIO Shahbaz of New Karachi police station were sitting at a tea shop when some gunmen riding a motorbike came and targeted both the cops and escaped.

DIG West Javaid Odho while talking to The Nation said Inspector Hyder was on routine patrolling when Shahbaz joined him. Both of them were sitting a tea shop located near Anda Mor, North Karachi when they were targeted. DIG Odho further said it would be difficult to ascertain the motive behind the killing of both the cops but they could not rule out the possibility of militancy element behind the incident.

DSP Chaudhry Akhter when contacted said the police mobile and other cops were also present on the other side of the road but they were unable to chase the culprits. Both the cops sustained bullets’ wounds and were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced their deaths. Following the killing, heavy contingent of police and rangers rushed to the area and started door to door search operation and took several suspects into custody.

It is worth mentioning here that the district west of police remain on the top for offering martyrdoms because of the raising phenomenon of outlawed TTP. A large number of police personnel and officers have been targeted alone in District West. In some areas, security forces could not even enter the areas because of TTP domination.

Meanwhile, at least eight people were gunned down in separate incidents of target killing here on Wednesday.

Two workers, including the area in-charge Saeed Ahmed, 40, and Amir Kamran, 35, were shot dead while Ayub was wounded when gunmen opened indiscriminate fire in Korangi locality. They were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy and treatment. SHO Malik Mazhar said the victims were associated with the MQM’s Hazara Organising Committee. The motive behind the incident has yet to be ascertained while further investigation was underway.

Separately, a watchman of a private school was shot dead in New Kumhar Wara area of Lyari. He was identified as Nisar Ahmed, 45. Police said Lyari gangsters were behind the incident while further investigation was underway.

In another incident of target killing, Janan Ali, 26, was shot dead near his residence in Gulshan-e-Bunair area of Landhi. Police officials said he was working in a private factory and was standing near his residence when two armed men riding a motorcycle shot him dead over unexplained reasons. The body was moved to JPMC for autopsy and later handed over to family.

In the major incident, two policemen were shot dead in an act of target killing in SITE area. The victims were identified as Amir Khan, 48, and Shabbir Alam, 35. Both the cops were deployed at a police post at Ismaili Apartment in Metroville area. Police officials said the incident took place when they were going to a nearby restaurant for dinner. SSP Irfan Baloch said at least two armed men riding a motorcycle shot them dead and managed to flee.

Amir Khan died on the spot while Alam succumbed to injuries during treatment at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The officer said the assailants shot the victims in their heads and chests.

In another incident, a criminal was shot dead in an act of target killing in Surjani locality. He was identified as Amjad Hashim, 25. Police said the victim was recently released from the jail. Apparently, he was killed by his own companions. Further investigation was underway.

Police found a shot dead tortured body from Gulistan Society, Shah Latif Town. Police said some unknown assailants threw the body at the said place. It was later shifted to morgue for identification after autopsy at JPMC.
