In praise of this media

The political philosophers have underlined the need for free speech for three main reasons. They believed freedom to speak, read or write is an important element in exposure and revelation of truth, ensures self-development and provides opportunity for self-fulfillment to citizens. It also helps ensure participation of the citizens in a democracy. The Pakistani media is enthusiastically fighting for these values in the 21st century. Despite an ongoing war in the country, the media is playing its role and performing to the exacting standards of modern times. By airing divergent views and engaging in cross examination and analysis of all significant national and social issues, it is informing the public opinion and practically sharing the task of the parliament. Investigative reporting and live discussions can help break the spell of many a magician that acquire undeserved hold on public psyche. Media has shown an unprecedented ability to act as a catalyst of change and has strengthened the civil society and democratic polity. -ZEESHAN KHAN, Islamabad, September 7.
