LAHORE The traditional culture of Punjab and what it is usually said a male dominant society is all set to enter a new period after a few days as hundreds of educated females are going to start their careers as taxi drivers across the province. The final balloting for 20,000 Yellow Cabs under Punjab Chief Minister Rozgar Schme would complete on Sunday (today). The exact number of winners from females applicants would be established after the completion of final balloting process in three divisions, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad and Gujranwala. However, the lucky winners list only for Lahore revealed that the City routes would witness 70 women as cabbies. Transport Department officials are estimating above 1,000 females may win the cabs in the province. The Citys list detail reveals that females from posh localities of DHA, Model Town and Gulberg to developing and poor areas succeeded to win the cabs. Two Hafiz-e-Quran females also won the cabs in computerized balloting. The provincial government had fixed the tehsil-wise quota for 20,000 Bolan and Mehran vehicles. Out of 651 Bolan winners, 21 women succeeded to get vehicles while out of 976 Mehran winners, the female numbers were 49. It means that females belonging to only the City won 70 cabs. Though it is expected that number of women would handover their cabs to male drivers on monthly salary, the conditions are already relaxed for women applicants in this regard, but it is being held that majority of the females would continue their fresh job themselves for earning their livelihoods. Keeping in mind the monthly bank instalment of Rs 8,000, expenses on vehicle maintenance and high cost of fuel, one cannot justify the reason for handing over cabs to drivers, an official of the transport department said. The background discussion with the transport department officials established the females have a little choice but to ply their cabs themselves. In the society the campaigners claim harassment is commonplace and women do not choose livelihoods that make them even more vulnerable. It is also being held the girls shy away from non-traditional jobs in a setting where there is a particular mind-set of intimidation. This is being said that with the start the work, the female drivers might face the challenges of insecure environment, strange views of the people about their profession, criticisms and discouraging comments from some corners of the society and security problems as well. But, they have to work for setting new examples in the society, the officials held.
