KARACHI PIA seeking to retain the national hockey title last time they won luckily on goal difference, were ruthless in defeating KESC 6-1 to record a fourth victory in the ten team NBP sponsored 57th national hockey championship here at Hockey Club of Pakistan stadium. In the last championship PIA and NBP tied on points at the end of the League but because of better goal difference the airline was awarded the national title which is likely to slip out of their hands. Wapda thrashed PAF 5-2 after leading 4-2 at half time to record its fourth win in five games. The biggest shock of the championship came when Pakistan Navy defeated Port Qasim by a big 6-3 margin for its first victory in five matches in the third contest of day 8 of the competition. PIA from five matches has collected 13 points two less than NBP which has mustered fifteen from five matches. Muhammad Zubair was the star of the PIA victory. He contributed three second half goals to the airlines wining margin. Inayatullah added two and Hassan Akhtar one for the winners. KESC, which suffered their fourth straight defeat got their consolation goal through Muhammad Umair late in second session. KESC has managed just one win in five matches. They won against Sui Southern Gas by 4-3 margin. With the half way stage passed, NBP has emerged as clear favourites to clinch the coveted title. They not only are leading on points table but their goal average is far better than any other team in the competition. So far the NBP has scored thirty goals and conceded ten goals. NBPs last three out of four matches would be against tough opposition. PIA, HBL and Wapdas encounters will be very tough contests. Their fourth match will be against the PAF. Wapda which finished third in the last championship found little resistance from Pakistan Air force in its 5-2 won over airmen in the second match of the day. Six of the seven goals of the one-sided contest came in the first session in which Wapda scored four and PAF two goals. It is surprising that PAF took two goals lead within eleven minutes and Mushtaq and Kashif Yacqoob scored one goal each. The airmen, however, could not retain the advantage till the half time and they conceded four goals to the ultimate winners. Sohail Abbas scored through PC first Wapda goal in the 17th minute. Later Waqas Shariff hit the target twice in two minutes just before lemon time to put Wapda in a commanding lead. In the second session, Furhan completed the score line for the winners. Pakistan Navy created a stir when they defeated Port Qasim by 6-3. Falak Zaman, Muhammad Rashid, Abdul Mannan, Muhammad Imran, Muhammad Sabir and Bilal Sabir netted for the sailors.
