Former Senate chairman and senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Dr Farooq H. Naek, has been appointed as federal minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs on Wednesday.

Naek was sworn in by President Asif Ali Zardari during a ceremony held at the presidency also attended by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and others.

He has replaced Maula Bux Chandio, who resigned from his post during a Senate session earlier this year soon after reports emerged that his predecessor Babar Awan could be reappointed as the law minister.

Chandio later denied tendering his resignation; however, Leader of the House Nayyer Hussain Bokhari confirmed it.

Awan, who was considered right hand of the PPP co-chairman and the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, has now been sidelined by the leadership due to his refusal to appear before the apex court as a witness in a contempt of court case against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
