SWABI - Transporters on Tuesday observed a complete wheel-jam strike against the hike in the prices of petroleum products and CNG while rejecting the minor reduction and labeling that as a lollipop.
The announcements were made by both goods and public transporters, threatening both public and private vehicle owners that they should stay away from roads and if anyone of them made any attempt to violate the strike, he would be responsible for any untoward incident. Even the rickshaws and private cars were not allowed to ply on roads.
They demanded of the government to take the petroleum and CNG to the 2011 period while reviewing the fresh oil prices raise. In the district headquarters and Gohati busstop, rickshaw drivers were beaten up by the transporters when they violated the strike. Leaders and workers of transporters were monitoring the outlets across the district and the main conjunction points of transport remained in their occupation for the entire day.
The commuters were expected that after the launch the rules might be relaxed and transport vehicles would resume their activities but the situation remained tense the whole day.
The commuters who were on way to Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi were forced to move back to their homes. The major problem was faced by the womenfolk who remained stuck in general bus stands, waiting for hours to return homes. However, reports said that partial strike was observed in the inaccessible areas.
