President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has demanded of the government to immediately announce the holding of general elections saying every passing day was exposing its corruption scandals which is a blot on democracy.

Talking to media here in Islamabad Wednesday after former PPP Senator Anver Baig announced his joining of the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif said there has been no reduction in corruption and bad governance of the PPP. He said the whole nation was perturbed over the corruption scandals and was not ready to bear the present rulers even for a single day any more.

Nawaz Sharif said the more the present government will remain in place, problems of the people and the country would increase. He said it was in the interest of the rulers that the early they pack up the better.

Asked about allegations against Ali Musa Gilani, son of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Nawaz Sharif said scandals of corruption have been surfacing on daily basis and the rulers have broken all the corruption records.

Responding to a question regarding memogate, he said that he had not backed off from the case as it was he who moved the Supreme Court in the scandal. He said if summoned by the court he would appear before it.

About remarks by some political leaders that the PML-N was playing the role of a friendly opposition, Nawaz Sharif posed a counter question and referred to the remarks made by President Asif Ali Zardari about him. He said such remarks are not made for the friendly opposition.

The PML-N president said he conveyed concerns to US Ambassador Cameron Munter about resumption of NATO supplies making it clear that there was no confusion in the party leadership on this issue.

He demanded the government to remove concerns of the people about drone attacks, presence of foreign intelligence agencies and activities of their operatives in Pakistan.

He said Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was present at the dinner hosted by the Saudi Ambassador for visiting Deputy Foreign Minister of the kingdom and government’s view point about NATO supplies was unclear. He however pointed out that Pakistan cannot remain in isolation but to move ahead with other countries.

He said at the same time the international community must remove Pakistan’s concerns and understand its problems. He said the US and NATO will have to find a solution for an end to drone attacks and violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.

Regarding visit of President Zardari to India, Nawaz said they would support every good step of the government and oppose anything that was not in the interest of the country.

About allegations by Younis Habib, the PML-N president said he never got any money from him and has sent a notice to him under the defamation act.

Without naming Chaudhry brothers, Nawaz Sharif said that party doors were closed for those who vowed to get Pervez Musharraf  elected for 20 times.

Earlier former senator and most active member in the diplomatic community Anver Baig joined the PML-N in the presence of Mian Nawaz Sharif. Others present included Raja Zafarul Haq, Ahsan Iqbal, Mushahidullah Khan and senior party leaders.

Welcoming Anver Baig in the party ranks, Nawaz Sharif said that he was a close associate of late Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and had opposed the politics of Zardari. He said he joined PML-N due to differences with the policies of the rulers.

Nawaz Sharif announced to make Anver Baig member of PML-N’s Central Executive Council (CEC) and said the party would benefit from his capabilities.
