LAHORE – PML-N President Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif through their lawyer have served legal notices on former Mehran Bank president Younus Habib to claim damages worth Rs 10 billion each for their character assassination. It has been stated in the notices that Younus Habib levelled fabricated and unsubstantiated allegations for damaging the political and social standing of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif.In the notices served through famous legal firm Cornelius, Lane and Mufti Advocates and Solicitors, it has been stated that Nawaz and Shahbaz are respectable and highly revered citizens of the country and the former has served twice as prime minister of the country while the latter has twice been the chief minister of Punjab and presently serving as Punjab CM for the third time.Nawaz and Shahbaz during their tenures took steps for the supremacy of law in the country, ensuring sovereignty and strengthening of national economy as well as utilised all resources for the welfare of the masses, it was stated. It has further been observed in the notices that Younus Habib tried to conduct media trial of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif by levelling false and slanderous allegations for damaging their political and social status. ‘It has been stated that Younus Habib gave contradictory statements on media and changed his stance again and again which is a proof of his being a liar’. After the receipt of notices, Younus Habib should tender a formal apology in print and electronic media within 14 days of the receipt of the legal notice, otherwise, legal proceedings will be initiated against him seeking damages worth Rs 10 billion each.Younus Habib had alleged before the media that he doled out a total sum of Rs 55 lakh to Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif on two occasions for the purpose of their help in the formation of anti-PPP IJI alliance in late 80s and early 90s. The Sharifs vehemently deny the charges.
