ISLAMABAD  - The government has allowed the US embassy to expand its layout despite stiff resistance by the intelligence agencies. The eight-storey building would expand over an area of several kilometres accommodating more than 6,000 personnel, informed sources in Capital Development Authority said on Tuesday. The sources said it would be like a cantonment. While the US embassy spokesman says in his statement that they were granted NoC by the CDA and no other institution in Islamabad has expressed its reservation on the expansion work. Majority of Pakistanis see the expansion plan as a threat to national interests at a time when the anti-US sentiments are running at highest peak after May 2 episode and Salala checkpost attack, killing 24 Pakistani soldiers. While the most extreme views of strategic experts are that the US may use its embassy as a base camp for its covert operations in South Asia and Middle East.
