MARDAN - One cop was killed while other got seriously injured in an attack on an anti-polio vaccination team in Mosam Koroona area on Wednesday.

An anti-polio vaccination team, comprising two constables, two females and a male health worker, was on vaccinating drive in Mosam Koroona in the precincts of Par Hoti Police Station when two motorcyclists shot them.

Constable Raj Wali died on the spot while constable Ishfaq got seriously wounded. The other members of the team remained unhurt.

The injured constable was shifted to Mardan Medical Complex (MMC) but was referred to the Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar where he was said to be in critical condition.

Extended Program on Immunization (EPI) Mardan Coordinator Dr Abdul Wahab said that the ongoing anti-polio campaign would be continued despite the attack.

AFP adds: No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but the Taliban last year banned polio vaccinations in the tribal region of Waziristan, alleging the campaign was a cover for espionage.

Rumours about vaccines being a plot to sterilise Muslims have also dogged efforts to tackle the highly infectious disease.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only countries where polio is endemic. Polio cases in Pakistan hit 198 in 2011, the highest figure for more than a decade and the most of any country in the world, according to the UN.
