Mr Faisal Kareem Kundi, Deputy Speaker of National Assembly, has stated in Nawa-e-Waqt (of August 9, 2010) that if a Right Bank Gravity Canal is agreed upon by all provinces, then we would agree to build the Kalabagh dam. All concerned should support this logical proposal as the 14 % share of water pledged in the Water Accord of 1991 could only be provided to Pakhtunkhwah from a Right Bank Gravity Canal. Mr. Kundi has rightly proposed to safeguard the water rights of his province but that would help the lower riparian Sindh also which would be saved from devastation of floods it faces today if the Kalabagh dam were to store 6.1 MAF of floodwater upstream. The federal government must proceed post-haste on Mr Kundis proposal for providing a lasting benefit to all provinces of Pakistan. The lands of Dera Ismail Khan, Mr Kundis home town, would also get ample supply of water, mitigating the colossal losses caused by floods this year. Mr Kundis proposal should be welcomed by all stakeholders. -DR M. YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore Cant, August 9.
