LALAMUSA - Hundreds of employees of the Tehsil Municipal Administration of Gujrat on the call of a union went on strike as a protest against nonpayment of salaries.

Consequently, sanitation condition remained very poor in the area. The protesting workers said that Eid is near to approach but they are unpaid for the last two months. “We do not have even a single penny to buy clothes and other things for our children for Eid or to maintain household expenses,” they said.

Similarly, the employees of civic units of Kunjah, Jalalpur Jattan and Shahidiwal towns also joined the protest held by the TMA Gujrat employees. They also strongly protested against the mismanagement and threatened to go on strike if their salaries were not disbursed immediately.

It may be recalled that 14 officials of the TMA have been booked on the charges of embezzlement and the Anti-Corruption Establishment is engaged in the investigation. Thus, all the officials responsible for handling financial matters including salaries of employees have been dismissed and there is no other officer available at the TMA office to prepare and disburse salaries.

On the other hand, newly appointed TMO Mehmood Iqbal Ghondal said that he had given several reminders to the high authorities for early appointment of new audit officer in place of suspended audit officer but till date nothing has been done.
