Australian technical assistance sought for agriculture

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Minister for Food and Agriculture, Nazar Muhammad Gondal on Thursday said that government was keen to replace some of the land under rice and wheat by oilseed to save more than $ 2 billion on the import of edible oil annually. While talking to High Commissioner of Australia Tim George, who called on him here Thursday, he said that Australian guidance and technical know-how will be highly appreciated in this regard. Australia and Pakistan can benefit greatly from each others potential in the field of agriculture as both the countries have agri-based economies. The minister said that Australian assistance in the development of biotechnology, water conservation system and edible oilseed can prove to be of paramount importance for Pakistan. There is a huge desert land in Baluchistan and Punjab provinces as well as other parts of the country where the Australian expertise can prove to be productive, he said.
