ISLAMABAD (APP) - Pakistan Railways has paid an amount of Rs 14.7 million as compensation to families of passengers who lost their lives in train accidents since January 2008 till date. As per data available here on Saturday, 19 persons were killed in train accidents during the period. Pakistan Railways, with the objective to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future, has taken steps including training and refresher courses which are conducted regularly at Pakistan Railway Academy, Walton. Special attention is being given to the training of the field staff, especially the locomotive crew guard, station master etc. Moreover, special campaigns for public awareness regarding safety and security have also been launched while regular inspections in accordance with prescribed standards and quota are conducted by the officers and officials of Pakistan Railways to maintain safety standards. Meanwhile, an official source said the process is being constantly monitored at appropriate levels. Special instructions are issued regularly for guidance of the staff. The official said inquiries into accident are held, responsibility is fixed and remedial measures on the basis of their findings are taken. He said metal detectors have been provided to Railway police and Civil Defence staff for checking of sabotage activities. The official said all the train staff including escorting police officials have been directed to remain highly alert at stations and in the trains. while special security, surveillance of important stations and installations is carried out by the Railway Police and strict security measures have been introduced to counter subversive activities. Moreover, extensive day and night patrolling of track by motor trolleys and push trolleys is being carried out under scheduled programme, he said and added protection of bridges by engaging Civil Police and deputing Railway employees and patrollers also being carried out at key points.
